Sony ICF-CD855VSIL TV/Weather/FM/AM 4 Band CD Clock Radio Review

Bought this for its sleek design, small footprint and CD capability.It was purchased for our babies room so that we could play CDs.We wanted something smaller and better looking than any of the boom boxes and not as expensive as the shelf systems at which we looked.

So your needs may differ if you plan to use this as an alarm clock.

We really like the size and sound quality for something this small.It is very easy to set up without even using the owners manual.The buttons are well placed and have a very solid feel. The unit has a very high quality feel to it as you would expect from Sony and considering the price.

All functions work as described so I won't spend a lot of time on them individually.Reception is excellent in FM mode, AM is a bit weaker. The TV and weather bands are very hit and miss as far as reception and was dissapointed that I could not get better reception from the preselectd weather frequencies as I live in a well populated area that is subject to severe weather.

CD works flawlessly but the size hinders the bass and mid-range a bit.But again, consideing the size of the unit I am more than happy with the sound quality. If sound quality is more important than size you may want to consider the Panasonic RC-CD350.

I have only four complaints about this unit... the wall wart power supply is huge, the LCD backlight is VERY bright, even on its lowest setting of three.This isn't too much of an issue for us as we will use it as a night light in our babies room.More frustrating is the fact that considering how bright the LCD backlight is it is difficult to read the LCD diplay.I couldn't use this if it were for my bedroom alarm clock. And the last is the lack of a battery back up. This is sort of silly in a unit that costs $80.

Bottom line is this is a high quality unit which has a few drawbacks that a unit of this price point shouldn't have.

Sleek design (Only Panasonic was close on design)
Relativly small size (considering it plays CDs)
Good sound quality (Panasonic was better but bigger)
Solid feel (What you expect from Sony at this price)

Cons:
Huge wall wart transformer
VERY bright LCD backlight
Poor weather band reception
Difficult to read LCD
No battery back up

RCA RP5605 AM/FM CD Clock Radio with Large LED Display Review

I am very happy with this clock radio/CD player.I especially like that the time can be set forward and backward and that the time display is easy to see without the light from it keeping me awake.The radio and CD player sound fine for what I use it for and for the price.The control buttons are in a good location and easy to use in the dark, once you know where everything is.

Sony ICF-CD815 AM/FM Stereo CD Clock Radio with Dual Alarm Review

The old clock radio finally died and my husband and I thought it would be nice to have a CD player in the bedroom to listen to audio books in bed now and then (yes, I know, but it depends on the book!!).We've found the sound quality on such an inexpensive item to be extremely good, it's easy to tune the radio in and we like the huge time display - I can even see it without my glasses at night!!So far, it's awakened us at our ridiculously early get up time during the week without fail.No complaints - very happy with this clock/radio/CD player.

SONY ICF-CD830 AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio with CD Player Review

I admit this is really excessive, but I honestly shopped around for a CD alarm clock for about six months!They are kinda' pricy and I wanted to get a good one that would last, but also had lots of features.In the end, I ended up where I started.I've had a Sony Dream Machine alarm clock for over 10 years (pre-CD alarm clocks!)It has worked great and I've had no complaints....But in the end, if this lasts me another 10 years, it was worth the money (plus the price has gone down a little.)
But the best features of this alarm clock are:
* You can set all three alarms...I like to have the CD start first to wake up to music, and then the buzzer goes off 15 minutes later to actually get me out of bed!
* Speaking of the buzzer, this is about the best alarm I've ever heard.It isn't some harsh buzzer that starts your day off with a minor heart attack.This is a light beeping that gets louder and faster over time.So it too wakes you up nicer than many alarms.
* Finally, the programming is really simple and quick, so it isn't hard to change it if you need to.
So if you are looking for a CD alarm clock with all the features, this one is a good bet.

Coby CDRA147 Digital AM/FM Dual Alarm Clock Radio/CD Player (Black) Review

I bought this so I could wake to my own commercial-free music.After three days, the unit stopped playing CDs altogether so now I have yet another clock radio.During the brief period it worked, the CD sound was so terrible it startled me the first time I tried it: crackly, tinny and thin.The radio sound is slightly better, but not even close to my old (also cheap) clock radio.During the three days it worked, the unit woke me every day with the first track of the CD.You cannot adjust the alarm to start with a random track, or pick up where it left off the day before.The unit accepts a battery to keep time during an outage; however, the manual says the time will not display until power is restored, and I'm guessing that means the alarms won't work either.
Other negatives:Time-setting is uni-directional, so if you pass the hour you wanted when clicking through, you have to cycle around the clock again. My cheap RCA clock radio has spoiled me with bi-directional clock setting and digital radio tuning.
The Coby's buttons are flat, stiff, and hard to press.The radio is tuned via an awkwardly placed thumb wheel at the bottom right side of the unit, and it's difficult to lock on the station you want.The clock numbers are nice and large; however, like most clock radios, they are way too bright and cannot be dimmed (except by throwing a sock over the radio, which is what I had to do).
Since I dawdled a month before opening and using the radio, Amazon's 30-day Return window has expired.I'm going to try to return it anyway--without the CD function, it's useless to me.I'm going back to my old clock radio which was just as cheap, but has much better sound.Anyone know a Philadelphia-area radio station that plays fewer than 4 commercials between 5:45 and 6 am?
Positives?I like the rounded shape.And I was able to set the clock and alarm times initially without reading the manual, something I've never been able to do with other clock radios.It arrived promptly and was securely packaged.It was my mistake not to immediately set it up for use.
