Grundig G4 World Recorder Black Review

The previous (and first) review (Cool design, mediocre performance, July 13, 1999) of the G4 is no doubt a review of the discontinued Grundig Executive Traveler G4, not the new Grundig World Recorder G4 (the World Recorder did not exist in 1999). Currently there do not appear to be any reviews of the G4 World Recorder.

I do not own either radio. My rating is based merely on the fact that Grundig's documentation and specifications fail to mention at what bit rate (Kbps) the G4 will record and the fact that the recording bit rate (i.e. recording quality) is apparently not selectable as there is no mention of it in the user manual.

Lenoxx Sound Compact Disc Player Cd Am/fm Radio BoomBox Review

I have had this radio for about 7 YEARS, and my children grew up playing CD's on it. They dropped to the floor many times. It even continues playing upside down. At this point I think it's indestructible. I'm so glad I bought it when I did.

Kaito KA1101 AM/FM Shortwave Radio, Black Review

Kaito/Degen has done it again! I needed a small AM/FM/SW radio for travel and have compared several including the Kaito KA1105, the Kaito KA11, the Kaito 1102, the Grundig G6, the Grundig YB-550PE, the CCRANE SWP (Redsun RP300), the Tecsun PL-450, etc. I am still not done with all my evaluations, but I definitely think that the Ka1101 is a great small and very inexpensive ($~55-60 depending on the vendor) and a very excellent receiver! The identical radio is available in both silver and very dark gray/black. I am extremely impressed right out of the box how well it performs even for quite weak signals and with the antenna on SW not even extended.

PROS:

1) Comes with rechargeable batteries, velcro-sealed slip case, earbuds, long antenna wire, adapter/charger and very readable manual (which fits nicely inside of the supplied slip case!). Batteries are designed to be easily recharged inside the radio.

2) Excellent weak signal reception on ALL bands including Low frequency FM or FML (starting at 70 MHz). It really performs very well!

3) Excellent bandwidth choice for the Wide/narrow switch on the keyboard on AM (MW) and SW and a separate FM, FML tone switch (labeled as Music/news on the right hand side of the radio), a Mono/Stereo switch on the keyboard as well as a Local/DX switch on the left hand side of the radio.

4) Lock switch and external antenna jack.

5) Back light controlled by available ambient lighting with an on-board light sensor system.

6) Numerous tuning methods available.

7) Very high quality and very readable display with numerous icons for charging, battery life, Mono/stereo settings, wide/narrow filter setting, etc.

8) Very long battery life.

9) Simple direct system for changing the 5 individual bands in direct order only (no reversing of the band change direction is possible).

10) Finally, it has a nice and very easy to use reset button on the front panel just in case the system acts irregularly (which I have not observed at all).

CONS: These are all very small and of no great significance whatsoever!

1) Tuning is limited to only the up/down slewing keys with only a 5 KHz frequency step which is relatively coarse, but usually sufficient given its bandwidth(Wide/Narrow) capabilities.

2) Only a total of 50 presets are available (10 on each of the 5 bands), however they are extremely easy and very intuitive to set and recall.

3) Smallish speaker (after all, I wanted the radio to be small and portable so this has to be the case!).

4) No signal strength meter available on-screen or otherwise.

5) It uses 3 AA batteries instead of a pair of batteries. Also, when rechargeable AA's are used, the full battery charge will not register on the screen (only 3 of 4 of the battery indicator icons are visible under these conditions).

jWIN Pocket AM/FM Alarm Clock - Silver (JXM10SIL) Review

You get what you pay for. That's still true. The station tuning button didn't work well. When I tune in for a station, the station number didn't show up correctly. The radio station that shows on the front window always screw up. I get some stations though. It would be good enough for those listening to a few stations (not radio surf) and stick with them. I bought it for the speaker feature. Not many small or tiny radios have the speaker function, most require a headphone. I give it a small credit for its overall small size and the decent sound that comes out of its tiny speaker.

I wouldn't waste your money on buying this.. mine broke after two weeks in a dry room tempature place. Meaning, it wasn't because I got water in it because its a "shower" radio.. I never tested that out but if I did it would of probably broke even sooner. I'm very disappointed :(

SuperSonic SC-1099 Black Digital AM FM Portable Mini Pocket Radio Review

***WARNING!***
DO NOT BUY THIS FOR LISTENING TO MUSIC!
It has a tinny sounding speaker with virtualy no bass response.

So, why did I give this a five star rating? I bought this radio because I wanted a battery operated radio for news and sports. Plus it has a clock function.

**PROS**
+Small, yet solid. It measures 4 3/4 x 3 x 1 1/2 inches. It easily fits into a shirt pocket.

+Good battery life. I currently have fifty plus hours on two AA alkaline batteries and it is still going strong.

+Inexpensive. $14.99 + $6.00 s/h.

+Telescoping antenna. Convenient and much preferred over separate wire antennas.

+Good signal reception. It has an analog dial with digital lcd readout. No problems with signal drift so far.

+Easy to use clock and alarm functions. I recommend turning up the volume for the alarm since the tinny sound will irritate you into waking up.

+It has a backlight function that is simple and adequate.

+For news and sports, the speaker sounds fine.

+My earbuds work in mono in both ear pieces. (Much better sound for music.) It does have some low end static hum though.

+Although it is top-heavy with the antenna extended, it is easily remedied by laying the unit on its back. Or you can use the spring loaded flap on the back for the same purpose.

**CONS**

-Not suited for music. If I want music, I have a home stereo, an mp3 and a Sangean PDR-5 for music.

-The battery compartment lid, that does stay attached, is too loose. It is not a major issue. It should snap in more tightly though.

-No station presets. It is, after all, an analog dial. I did not expect that function anyway.

**SUMMARY**

It is a solid little radio suited for news and sports with good battery life. Even though it has tinny sound, this little fella has grown on me. I am happy with it so far, even though I've only had it for a week. If a problem or malfunction occurs, I will update.

Update 2/12/10.

+With two lesser expensive Rayovac alkaline AA cells, I got over 190 hours of usable radio time! In my opinion, that is very good battery life!

Tivoli Audio SongBook AM / FM Alarm Clock Travel Radio, Green Review

The new Tivoli Songbook is one sweet, versatile radio.I was reluctant to order it because it was brand new model and I couldn't find any reviews, but I'm glad I overcame my reluctance and purchased this radio.I consider it expensive for an AM/FM radio so I expect serious performance for the money--I was not disappointed. It's Tivoli, so I expected sound quality and Tivoli delivers. The sound isn't quite as full as the Model One, but it's more than adequate. For talk radio, it's simply the best sound I've heard from any radio.

One reason I hesitated purchasing was because I planned to use this as a table radio more than a travel radio--the lack of external antenna jacks was a concern because I have trouble with AM reception in my area. The real surprise was the reception--this small radio locked on and pulled in signals that I have trouble pulling in with some of my better radios like the GE Superadio or Grundig Satellit 800--all while delivering a clear, clean signal.Admittedly, I'm not a DXer, and I'm not suggesting this is the radio for that purpose, but it's performance, particularily on AM, is impressive for such a small package.

Performance was great using the aux input on a Sirius tuner as well as MP3 and CD.

Overall, it has the look and feel--as well as performance--of a quality product.

One thing that you should be aware of--this model uses an outboard transformer--a relatively large wall wart. That negates some of the travel versatility, IMO, but isn't a problem for home use. One of the smart design features is the wall hang slot on the back--I promptly mounted the thing over my nightstand and cleared off the space formerly eaten up by my cheap, tinny sounding clock radio.

It's a rare day that a product meets my expectations, much less exceeds them, but this is a great radio!

COBY CX39 Portable AM/FM/SW1/SW2 Band Radio with Digital Display Review

It's certainly a substantial radio for the money.
FM reception is excellent.
AM reception is marginal for a rural area.
I ordered 3 radios. ( for family members )
One didn't work right out of the box.
Another developed a scratchy volume control
after a few hours of use.
