Emerson CKS1702 SmartSet Alarm Clock Radio Review

Emerson CKS1702 SmartSet Alarm Clock RadioThis thing is pretty nice because if the power goes out it'll automatically reset to the correct time (either the one set at the factory or the one that you've tweaked, if the factory preset was a bit off). It's not atomic, but it's the next best thing. The radio comes in pretty good too, depending on how you have the antenna positioned (the FM antenna is built into the power cable, and the AM antenna is an iron rod built into the case). It keeps the time when the power is out by way of a small lithium "button" battery. The instructions say that, depending on how long it was on the shelf at the store, the battery could last up to 5 years and that when it does get low a light will flash in the bottom-right corner to alert you. It can even be set to awake you at different times set by you on weekdays or weekends, although the process to do this is a bit convoluted, but if you read the instructions carefully it's easy enough. You can set the alarm to wake you up by way of the radio, or a beeping noise. The beep should awaken even the heaviest of sleepers (after all, it wakes me up). The instructions say that the beeping will rise in volume until you press the alarm button to reset it until the same time next day, or until you press the snooze button to make it sound again in 8 or 9 minutes (can't remember the exact number). Just make sure you don't press the snooze button 7 times or it will NOT sound again until the next day! So keep track of how many times you push the snooze button, get up the first time or risk oversleeping. Overall, this is a very nice, affordable alarm clock. I must also say that the instructions are very informative and easy to understand.

Emerson CKS9051 SmartSet Dual Alarm Clock Radio Review

Emerson CKS9051 SmartSet Dual Alarm Clock RadioAfter days of researching, I finally found the best alarm clock for me and my wife! We are so happy with what we found.

I can't say anything bad about this alarm clock, it got everything we are looking for:
- Weekday\weekend\everyday alarms function for each of its 2 alarm. We set up alarm 1 @ 6a.m. on weekdays (for me), alarm 2 @ 7:30a.m. (for her) on weekdays, therefore no alarm on the weekend. We don't have to wake up by the alarm clock Sat. @ 6a.m ever again.
- Individual setting for each alarm wake up to a gradual buzz or radio.
- The clock has a high/low light setting. If you think the display is too bright, set it to low.
- The display is very clear, showing time and day of week.
- The radio is very clear compare to our existing radio alarm clock.
- The most amazing thing is that the clock will reset itself to the correct time in the event of a power outage. The alarm will preserve the alarms' settings. So in case of a power outage in the middle of the night, when the power comes back on, your alarm clock will continue to function as before. What a great idea! You don't have to manually reset it again, and worse, miss you morning alarm.

These are other alarm clocks that I looked at:

Made by Emerson also. I was going to get this one, but I tried it at a store and it can tip forward as you reach in from hitting the snooze button. Also, some of the button are small. CKS 9051's design is much more stable\sturdy.
Emerson Radio Jumbo Triple Display Dual Alarm AM/FM Clock Radio with SmartSet Technology

Too expensive.
Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio

Too small, for travle maybe.
RiteAlarm Triple Weekly Alarm Clock (R) for Weekdays, Saturday and Sunday, Automatic Extended Daylight Saving Time, Automatic Snooze, Adjustable Volume, Gentle Sound Pattern, Simple Buttons, Pushing Backlight and Battery Operated

This could work, but we prefer larger display and not background lit ones.
Timex Nano Color

Could work but couldn't find it at a store (Target\Sears) to try. Dispay might be too small.
Sony ICFC180 AM/FM Clock Radio

Might work but don't like the dial, display too small. A little expensive.
American Innovative Neverlate 7-Day Alarm Clock

Hope this help.

Emerson Radio Jumbo Triple Display Dual Alarm AM/FM Clock Radio with SmartSet Technology Review

Emerson Radio Jumbo Triple Display Dual Alarm AM/FM Clock Radio with SmartSet TechnologyMy husband and I went through 4 other alarm clocks before we settled on this one. This alarm clock provided everything that was missing in each of our previous alarm clocks. It has a large easy to read from across the room display (but can be dimmed or shut off and then on again w/a wave of the hand), has two separate alarm settings which you can set for weekdays only, weekends only, and weekdays and weekends also w/buzzer,or radio which each of the two alarms can be set to individual preference. Both alarms are displayed constantly underneith the time (which is suprisingly reasuring feature to have) and my husband likes that the alarm shut off button (radio on/off) is a big round button off to the very left side of the alarm which allows him to turn the alarm off every morning without first putting his glasses on and then hunting for the off button.I love it that once you tap the off button, it turns the alarm off for the day and then automatically resets itself to wake me up again the next day.I also have the option to not shut the alarm off and listen to the radio for an hour as I get ready for work, after which time it will shut itself off until the next day again. All in all a very good buy and well worth the money!!

Jensen Interactive AM/FM Talking Dual Alarm Clock - JCR-290 (Black) Review

Jensen Interactive AM/FM Talking Dual Alarm Clock - JCR-290I was hoping that since this was made by Jensen that the sound quality would be better than the average clock/radio. Unfortunately, it was worse than average. Very tinny, I've heard better in the sixties. The price seems to be based on the voice recognition feature, a nice touch if you use the program wake up sounds. It can't be used with the radio setting. The time display is huge and makes a great night light even when set on the dim setting. On the higher setting, you can read by it. Manual controls are easy to use once you get the hang of them.

Emerson Dual-Alarm Clock Radio - CK5051 Review

Emerson Dual-Alarm Clock Radio - CK5051My husband and I really enjoyed this clock. Why we don't have it anymore has nothing to do with how it performed. It was a great clock. We liked how the numbers were large. That LED light makes it soothing to look at as well. No bright red, yellow or green lights. Just a nice blue(and there is a dimmer switch on it if it is too bright for you). It's taller than it is long which makes it a nice space saver. We also had quite a few storms last year, and if your power goes out and comes back on later (even after 2 days like what happened to us, the right time WILL show up again) And as an added bonus, the alarm still goes off on time if it is plugged in and the power is out (so long as you put a battery in it of course :D ). About that snooze button. We had no problems with that either. If you set the clock away from where you sleep, so you have to get up to turn it off, then you will actually look to see where the snooze/radio buttons are. Of course you're going to hit another button if you just reach over the bed, eyes half shut, and slap the thing. We had no problem finding the buttons with our eyes wide open. One more compliment has to be that we didn't find the buzzer annoying either. It was actually pleasant compared to every other one we tried out in the store. Go ahead, try them out. You'll see what we mean. It's more of a beep than a BUZZ! Which was really nice. Me personally I have to have the buzzer on. Otherwise I will fall back asleep to the music, and the one thing I can't stand to hear when I first wake up in the morning, is a loud BUZZ sound. Praise God, they made one that BEEPS for a change. Well, take care and God bless you all, and enjoy your alarm clock. (whichever one you choose to buy)

RCA RP5440 SmartSnooze Dual Wake AM/FM Clock Radio with Time Projector Review

RCA RP5440 SmartSnooze Dual Wake AM/FM Clock Radio with Time ProjectorWhat I wanted out of an alarm clock was something that would wake me up without driving me crazy.I can't stand alarm clocks that buzz or go "beebeebeebeep" and I hate waking up to music (because it makes it impossible to enjoy the songs after that). The RCA RP5440 is probably the closest I'll get.

This alarm clock is easy to set and has a dual alarm.I use alarm 1 for waking up for school and alarm 2 for waking up on weekends. They can't be set to days of the week, but I set one for 6AM and one for 8AM and switch between the two at the push of a button.

A problem I have always had waking up was that I could disable the alarm without waking up at all, so I would set three different alarms scattered across my room.Somehow, this alarm clock just wakes me up.Things may change as the school year drags on and my nights get later, but so far I am delighted.

The alarm makes a beeping sound, but it has a lot of tone to it, as opposed to the very electronic beeps I despise. It begins at a pleasantly quiet volume and increases within about 30 seconds to very loud.

The display is NOT blue digits on a black background as pictured, but black digits on a blue background.A very, very bright blue background. With the dimmer on (which auto-dims in darkness), it is like a night light. With the dimmer off, it is like a TV.This doesn't bother me, but if you can't sleep without total darkness, it will keep you up.

The projection feature is nice because I can simply hit the snooze button and the time is projected in red on my ceiling for about 10 seconds. The projector tilts and the angle changes so the time on the ceiling can be readable if you like the clock facing your bed or parallel to the headboard.

Some features I don't use but might be good for you are the adjustable snooze (1-30 minutes) and the sleep function, which allows you to fall asleep to the radio or your own music and it automatically shuts off.

One neat feature is the AUX input. This means, with the right cable (small headphone plug on each end, not included) you can plug your iPod into the radio and listen to it or fall asleep to it.iPods also have a sleep feature so you can make the two turn off at the same time.

My biggest problem with the alarm clock is the temperature feature. The indoor temperature feature is great and it works perfectly. But my window is 3 or 4 yards from my nightstand, so the outdoor temperature sensor can't contact the alarm clock. The sensor unit sits on my windowsill with the sensor wire sticking out the window and it reads a temperature. But the outdoor temperature, according to the alarm clock, is - - -.Also, since it's a basement window, the temperature is a good 10°F lower than the real outdoor temperature. If your window is within about 10 feet from your nightstand and above ground, it will work for you.I have other ways of finding out the current temperature, and the temperature at 6AM is rarely the temperature I want to dress for, so it didn't ruin the purchase for me.

Being in the basement makes the AM radio reception not that great. The FM works fine because the antenna is in the power cord and FM is generally stronger, but the AM antenna is inside the alarm clock and has poor reception.Rotating the alarm clock improves reception by a little, but that messes up my time projection angle!

The clock sets itself right out of the box (using its installed AA batteries, which keep time and alarms going in case of a power outage), and all you have to do is tell it your time zone and whether or not you are on daylight saving time. Both options have their own switch on the back.Unfortunately, the time I got was 5 minutes slow, which, had I not noticed, would make a big difference for my morning routine.

A contributing factor to my general idea that this is just a great alarm clock is how simple it is to set the time and alarms. There is a button to increase time and a button to decrease time.It goes by minutes (not hours), but it goes really fast when you hold the buttons.Never again will I have to waste time going through 59 minutes (on an old alarm clock that would scroll through minutes so slowly that pushing the button again and again was faster) because I accidentally set it to 6:01.

I am very happy with the alarm clock and I highly recommend it.Especially if you're above ground and have a window near your nightstand.

Crane USA CRW-2 Wellness Radio Review

Crane USA CRW-2 Wellness RadioI purchased this clock for a soft, muted way of telling time in the wee hours of the morning. Brightness was a big factor for me. I can't sleep with a bright clock. One of the great things about this one is that the brightness is adjustable: high, low, or completely turned off. Low is PERFECT for a light sensitive sleeper like me. Others would probably get along just fine with the high setting. I should note that this clock was not placed directly beside my bed. Instead, it is about 6 feet away, and I can read it flawlessly without eyestrain--daytime or night.

I couldn't find any information on what exactly the nature sounds are, which was disappointing. Even more disappointing were the actual sounds themselves. The first one is supposed to sound like a babbling brook; the second is a meadow with birds; and the third is a kind of waterfall sounding noise. The "babbling brook" sounds more like someone blowing bubbles in a water glass. It's very annoying, so for those who like annoying alarms, perhaps this one's for you. The meadow birds are actually not bad at all--kind of soothing. The waterfall just plain hurts my ears. I blame this on the inability to turn the nature sounds down--you cannot adjust the volume of these at all.

Radio reception is acceptable. It comes with a wire antenna, which is adequately long. It's also coated white to hide on white walls easily. The tuner is the ridged wheel style. Mine might be a little funky. One of my favorite local radio stations is 98.9 FM. It won't come in on this clock radio unless it's set at 98.8. Not a huge deal; just something to consider. The solo speaker is as to be expected. I was neither disappointed nor impressed with it. No presets or anything fancy for the radio; just AM and FM functions. I wanted to use the alarm function without any sound playing (which I will get to in a second). The radio alarm option was perfect for this. I turned the alarm on radio and just turned the volume all the way down (the radio is the only alarm function that can be volume controlled).

Why would I want the alarm function without the actual alarm? The pretty lights! One of the major selling points for me on this clock radio was the rainbow and sunrise simulated lights. The pictures do not do them justice. For the rainbow setting (which can be turned on at whim via a switch--it's not just for the alarm), it will turn on when it's time for the alarm to go off. It rotates through myriad colors (red, blue, green, orange, purple, yellow) beautifully. For the sunrise setting, approximately 30 minutes before the alarm is to go off, the dome lights up with a deep red. As alarm time draws closer, the dome changes to a lighter red, an orange, an orange yellow, and then a brighter yellow, simulating a sunrise. THIS is the effect I wanted to use without the sound of an alarm. I can look at my clock across the room and see that if a color is present, it's time to get up soon, and depending on what color is displayed, I can guess how much longer I can doze. This eases me awake, as opposed to a jarring, blaring alarm.

First-time users might have to glance through the (short) user manual before utilizing all the features. I couldn't figure out how to test the nature sounds (you have to go through the alarm and have the alarm switch on the nature sound option). User manual is easy to read, gets to the point, and covers all the bases without being annoying. Once you've browsed this guide, the clock radio is pretty intuitive.

My only complaint (other than the two disappointing nature sounds) is that my device's battery back-up function does not work. I'm guessing that it was returned once already, as there was no protective cover on the clock display, and one of the stickers was placed awkwardly on the bag packaging. There's something loose inside the clock--something pretty small--and I am guessing this is why the battery back-up does not work. Because I did not buy this clock as my main alarm and we don't have power outages often, I'm overlooking this issue and keeping the clock. If it weren't for these two items of disappointment, this item would have received 5 stars.

Emerson Research Dual-Alarm AM/FM Clock Radio with SmartSet Automatic Time Setting System - CKS3029 Review

Emerson Research Dual-Alarm AM/FM Clock Radio with SmartSet Automatic Time Setting System - CKS3029Living in hurricane territory, I definitely wanted some clocks that would function with or without the help of Florida Light and Power and that I would not have to reset whenever I experience a momentary loss of power. Three Emerson Smartsets made us a very happy household for almost two years now, until this morning. I went over to Brookstone where I know they sell these clocks to complain that my clock did not Spring forward. They handed me a sheet explaining how to manually update my clock (something I will need to do 4 times a year for my clocks purchased pre Marc 2006). Here's how you do it for anyone frustrated as I was:

1. On the second Sunday in March, set your clock to the next lowest number time zone (for example, if you live in the Eastern Time zone, Zone 02, you will change your clock to Zone 01 to move it ahead by one hour)

2. On the first Sunday in April, when the clock will automatically advance itself by one hour for whatever time zone you are in. You will then need to set the clock back to your correct time zone (Zone 02 if you are in the Eastern time Zone)

3. On the last Sunday in October, you would again set your clock to the next lower numbered time zone (Zone 01 if you are in the Eastern time zone). Your clock was not originally set to change times on this date.

4. On the first Sunday in November, the date your clock has been preprogrammed to fall back, you would again set your clock back to your correct time zone (Zone 02 if you are in the Eastern time zone).

Really this is a circumstance beyond Emerson's control, but I am starting to think that what Emerson needs to do is bring this smartset technology to an actual Atomic clock and then the government can change daylight savings time start and end dates as many times as they want, without Emerson consumers ever experiencing any problems. Until then, I hope this has helped someone who like me scoured the Internet for information on how to change the time on these not-so-smartsets after all.
